- Learn about the challenges that youth firesetting can present for clinical and forensic professionals
- Gain a basic knowledge of screen and intervention practices most appropriate for youth firesetters
- Explore some of the myths and misconceptions associated with youth firesetting
- Learn about the impairments and psychiatric disorders that are often comorbid within youth who set fires
Description:
Research suggests that many youths engage in curiosity-based firesetting. In some instances, however, repeated acts of firesetting can result in significant property destruction and loss of life. As such, it is important that mental health and criminal justice professionals understand the challenges and complexities of working with youths who set fires. In this 60-minute presentation, attendees will learn about the causes, consequences, and risk factors underlying youth firesetting. Specifically, the focus will be on evidence-based intervention strategies, typologies, psychiatric co-morbidities, intellectual deficits, and family dynamics. Relevant research findings and case study accounts will be presented throughout the session.
A post-test, handout, and certificate of completion will be provided upon completion of this one-hour webinar.
Presenter Biography:
Jerrod Brown, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor and Program Director for the Master of Arts degree in Human Services with an emphasis in Forensic Behavioral Health for Concordia University, St. Paul, Minnesota. Jerrod has also been employed with Pathways Counseling Center in St. Paul, Minnesota for the past fifteen years. Pathways provides programs and services benefiting individuals impacted by mental illness and addictions. Jerrod is also the founder and CEO of the American Institute for the Advancement of Forensic Studies (AIAFS) and the Editor-in-Chief of Forensic Scholars Today (FST). Jerrod has completed four separate master’s degree programs and holds graduate certificates in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Other Health Disabilities (OHD), and Traumatic-Brain Injuries (TBI).
