As a Forensic Mental Health Columnist, Dr. Kirven will be writing on various topics, including neighborhood adversity, trauma and toxic stress, mental health, and deviant behavior.


Dr. Joshua Kirven

Dr. Joshua Kirven is an associate professor in the Department of Social Work at Winthrop University and Part-Time Instructor at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC. His scope of work looks at the social determinants of mental health stressors causing health decline and community alienation of disenfranchised fathers and other marginalized groups. His practice posits particular focus on place- and SES-related disparities across the life course compared to life expectations and outcomes. Dr. Kirven has over twenty years of community engagement and practice experience with impact-oriented, evidence-based interventions and macro programming across communities and public-private sectors in the area of social conscious capitalism and existential functioning. He is a Fulbright Scholar and graduate of Hampton University, University of South Carolina and The Ohio State University, respectively.
